Do you really look like that picture?
ホントにあの写真みたいな顔してるんですか？

Well, no. I'm no longer that thin. And I no longer look that young.

I took that picture in 2005. Now I quit contact lenses and wear glasses instead. I had my hair dyed dark brown at that time. Right now I have shorter (and a bit balder) hair.

いや、あんなに痩せてません。あんなに若くもないし。

あの写真は2005年に撮ったもので、今はコンタクトを止めてメガネしてます。あの頃は髪もダークブラウンに染めてました。今はもっと短くなって（ちょっと薄くなって）ます。

Where do you live?
どこに住んでいるのですか？

I live in Koto-ku, Tokyo, 5km east of the Imperial Palace. The neighbourhood is called the "Fukagawa" district and it's been a housing area for townspeople for almost 400 years. I spent over 20 years in Nishinomiya, Hyogo when I was at school, but I'm originally from Kobe.

皇居から５ｋｍ東の江東区に住んでます。深川と呼ばれた、江戸時代からの町人の住宅地域です。社会に出る前は兵庫県の西宮市に２０年以上いました。生まれは神戸市です。

What did you go to school and what was your major?
学校はどこで何を専攻していたのですか？

I went to Osaka University. I graduated from the master's course in 1998. I did communications engineering, which means I researched land mobile communications including mobile phone or communicator systems. My degree title was "Master of Engineering." If I could've taken a minor course like a university in the US, I would've studied Japanese old history or Japanese old literature.

大阪の某国公立大学です。１９９８年に大学院の修士課程を修了しました。専攻は通信工学で、陸上移動通信（携帯電話とかモバイルとかのしくみ）の研究をやってました。日本の大学では専攻は１つしか取れないんですけど、もしアメリカみたく第二専攻が取れていたら、万葉集か古代史の研究でもやってたかもしれません。

What kind of mobile phones do you use right now?
今使ってるケイタイは何ですか？

Right now I keep three mobile phones on a daily basis: Blackberry Curve 9300, iPhone 4 and NEC's feature phone. Blackberry is my main cell phone for talking, text messaging, writing emails, and tweeting on Twitter and Facebook. iPhone 4 is a camera, a music player, a book reader and a web browser when going out. NEC's one is what my employer has me to carry with me so that I can be reached if something happens.

I liked Nokia mobile phones and used some of them several years ago, but Nokia no longer releases good mobile phones so I'm not happy with them.

今は毎日使ってるのは３台で、Blackberry Curve 9300、iPhone4、そしてNECのガラケー。Blackberryがメインで、通話、メール、Twitter・Facebook用。iPhone4は外出時のカメラと音楽プレーヤーとブックリーダーとWeb端末用。ガラケーは会社に持たされてるものです。

数年前はNokiaの携帯が好きで何台か使ってましたが、Nokiaがいい携帯出さなくなってしまって悲しいです。

You spell English words like British, right? Why don't you use American English though most Japanese learn it?
なぜイギリス英語で書いてるんですか？　日本人はほとんどアメリカ英語を習うのに？

Because I've found out British English is more "global standard" than American one. Actually I'm more familiar with AmE as the US is dominant in the information technology and computer science fields. When I travelled to Hong Kong and Singapore I saw the public signs and advertisement were all written in BrE, and when I saw on TV tourist information from Dubai or Abu Dhabi they had all BrE. In the menu of a Nokia mobile phone you'll find "Personalise," not "Personalize," which is used in the US. AmE is rarely seen in the places other than the US and Japan.

イギリス英語のほうがアメリカ英語より「グローバル・スタンダード」だとわかったからですね。ＩＴやコンピュータ・サイエンスの世界では米国が支配的なので実のところ米語のほうが親しみがあるんですが、香港やシンガポールに行くと広告や標識がみんなイギリス英語で書かれていたり、ドバイやアブダビの観光情報をＴＶで見るとそれもイギリス英語だったり、ノキアの携帯のメニューには米語の「Personalize」ではなく「Personalise」になってたり。米語はアメリカと日本以外ではあんまり見かけないんですよね。

Which countries have you ever been to, for business or private?
ビジネスでもプライベートでもいいんですが、どこの国に行ったことがありますか？

My first trip abroad was in Washington, DC in February 2002. It was for a business trip. In May that year I went to Washington, DC again. In June 2004 I was in Singapore with employees of NTT Communications for visiting Communic Asia expo. For private I visited Hong Kong in November 2004 and November 2005. In July 2007 I went to Hawaii as Northwest Airlines WorldPerks reached 40,000 miles. In January 2010 I was in Taipei, Taiwan to see my brother worked there at that time. In September 2010 I visited Singapore again and went as far as Johor Bahru and Gemas, Malaysia. In January 2011 I went to Shanghai for business.

I've never been to Europe, Africa and Oceania.

初海外は２００２年２月のワシントンで、出張で行きました。その年の５月にも再度ワシントンに行きました。２００４年６月にはCommunic Asiaの展示会を見に会社の人とシンガポールに行きました。プライベートでは２００４年と２００５年のそれぞれ１１月に香港に行きました。２００７年７月にはノースウェスト航空のマイレージが４００００マイルになったのでハワイに行きました。２０１０年１月にはそのころいた兄に会いに台北に行って、９月にはまたシンガポール、ついでにマレーシアのジョホールバルとグマスへ足を延ばしました。２０１１年１月には出張で上海です。

ヨーロッパ・アフリカ・オセアニアは行ったことがありません。
